Comparison of sugar beet varieties under saline and normal conditions in field trials

Salinity is a serious problem of soil degradation, limiting agricultural productivity especially in arid and semiarid regions around the world. In order to determine the performance of sugar beet breeding hybrids under salinity stress conditions and screening indices of salinity tolerance, 28 sugar beet hybrids and two controls were tested in salinity and normal conditions in Mian-Doab, Iran, in 2017. The experiment design was a randomized complete block with three replicates under normal and stress conditions. Twelve salinity tolerance indices were calculated for various genotypes based on root and sugar yield under the both stress and non-stress conditions. All hybrids have a higher average root and sugar yield in normal conditions than salinity conditions. Hybrids 30, 11 and 24 in normal conditions and hybrids 6, 13 and 25 in salinity condition were the highest root yield. Hybrids 30, 11, 19 and 24 in normal conditions and hybrids 6, 13 and 25 in salinity condition were highest root and sugar yield.
