چکیده مقاله:
In marshlands and coastal areas, wastewater usually feeds saline water bodies, which leads to being non-usable for crop cultivation in haloculture systems. Phytoremediation is a new scientific approach to clean contaminated waters, but it demands large areas. Further, vertical agriculture is a new method to compact plant cultures. The aim of this study was the investigation of the idea of wastewater phytoremediation by a vertical agriculture method called vertical wastewater phytoremediation (VWP). In this study, 20 Vetiver grass planted in a hydroponic vertical agriculture system. Afterward, to estimate the remediation ability of the VWP, wastewater flows into the system by four different flow rates, 60, 80, 100, and 160 l day-1. Results showed a reduction in BOD5 and NO3- concentrations and increase of EC and DO in the outlet. Maximum and minimum BOD5 reduction percentage (78.47% and 67.36%) occurred in flow rates 60 and 160 l day-1 respectively. Also, the maximum and the minimum NO3- removal percentage (90.53% and 36.41%) occurred in the same flow rates. With the increase of wastewater flow rate, phytoremediation performance decreased, but the performance of VWP with Vetiver grass was efficient enough to wastewater remediation.
