Evaluation of salinity tolerance indices in new sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) lines

In order to determine the performance of sugar beet breeding lines under salinity stress conditions and screening indices of salinity tolerance, 30 sugar beet lines were tested under salinity and normal conditions in West Azarbayejan, Iran, in 2017. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications under normal and stress conditions. Twelve salinity tolerance indices were calculated for various genotypes based on root and sugar yield under the both stress and non-stress conditions. All lines had a higher average root and sugar yield in normal conditions than salinity conditions. According to MP, GMP, STI, SSI, YI, YSI and SI indices, lines 6, 13 and 25 were the most tolerant to salinity for root and sugar yields, whereas for TOL, ATI and SSPI indices lines 11, 24 and 30 were the most tolerance for these two traits. The correlation between salinity indices for root and sugar yields under both conditions, could be used as the most suitable index for screening salinity tolerant genotypes.
